The Turntable Survey is co-ordinated by The Railway Heritage Register Partnership.
Many of the existing turntables are of the “outer race” support type. In this turntable type, the centre pivot merely serves to keep the assembly centred and in the case of electrical versions, provide a power supply route. The outer race and support wheels carry all the weight. The “balance” type turntables, where the stock being turned must be carefully centralised on the pivot before attempting to turn the item, only exist in preservation.
